Dr. Leonard Sax
Workshop and Keynote Speaker
Dr. Leonard Sax, author of the book Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences, will deliver the keynote address as well as conduct a pre-conference workshop at the 2007 South Carolina School Counselor Association conference.
Dr Sax is a family physician as well as a research psychologist. Dr. Sax is a proponent of providing recognition to gender differences in how children learn. He is an avid scholar and much sought-after speaker who regularly presents nationally and internationally. He has appeared frequently on television, speaking about the topic of gender differences in learning, including appearances on CNN, CBS Sunday Morning, and the TODAY show.
Dr. Sax has a new book coming out in Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men. A central premise in Dr. Sax’s work is that there are hardwired differences between boys and girls that influence how they take in and process information as well as respond to experiences. These differences have significant implications for both education and counseling practices. Dr. Sax asserts that for three decades, schools have taken a gender blind approach to education and that the ironic result of this approach is that it has actually intensified gender stereotypes.
